Washington—Scaling the Pyramid
A Model of Tertiary Intervention Services to Students with Challenging Behavior

The University of Washington developed and implemented a model of technical assistance to address the needs of students who engage in challenging behavior despite the efforts and implementation of school-wide positive behavior systems, both universal and secondary. Key to the Scaling the Pyramid model was a system of staff development to sustain knowledge of evidence-based practices in the school and classroom.

Multidisciplinary technical assistance teams consisting of five or six trained members provided long-term on-site assistance, support, and services to students with challenging behavior and the staff members who serve them. The teams provided ongoing training for site general and special education staff and administrators through workshops and delivery of resources on the tertiary interventions for students with persistent problem behaviors.
